Poland entered 36 athletes in Poznań across 30 events. Eighteen Polish boats reached an A final, two of them in paracanoe. Three more A-final starts came over 5000 m: Ewelina Antos placed 13th in the canoe, Zuzanna Błażejczak 14th in the kayak and Piotr Morawski did not finish.

A year earlier in Milan, Poland also won three medals, but in different colours: Anna Puławska won the K1 500 m and, with Martyna Klatt, the K2 500 m, while Wiktor Głazunow took bronze over 5000 m. Of those three events only the women's K1 500 m produced a medal again in Poznań, and gold turned into bronze. The other two medals came from different boats than a year ago.

What could be expected before the start

The 2026 season had drawn a fairly clear picture. Alex Borucki won the European title over 500 m in Montemor-o-Velho in June and finished fourth at the Montreal World Cup, 0.98 s off the win. Anna Puławska did not miss a podium over the same distance all season: third at the World Cups in Szeged and Brandenburg, second at the Europeans and second in Montreal. Klatt and Puławska won the K2 in Montreal and finished second at the Europeans.

Our pre-race chance-to-win forecast put Borucki at the head of the men's K1 500 m list: 8 per cent for gold, 31 for a podium and 77 for the top ten, in a field of 48. Puławska ranked second in the women's 500 m, three points behind Pauline Jagsch, who went on to win. Dorota Borowska was third in the women's C1 200 m list, and Głazunow third over the kilometre and second over 5000 m.

Two of those calls came in. Borucki and Puławska reached the podium, both on the bottom step. The other three did not: Borowska finished 10th, Głazunow 12th over the kilometre and fifth over 5000 m.

The forecast was least accurate in the event Poland actually won. In the men's C1 200 m the highest-rated name was Artur Guliev with 10 per cent for gold. In the final Koliadych beat him by 0.10 s.

Who raced above their season, and who below

Start with Koliadych, because Poznań looked nothing like the rest of his year. In the four earlier ranking regattas of 2026 he did not win a medal once: sixth in Szeged, fourth in Brandenburg, fourth at the Europeans and fourth in Montreal. In Poznań he won all three rounds and went faster each time — 42.38 in the heat, 41.85 in the semi-final, 40.95 in the final. In Milan a year ago he was fourth in this event, 0.36 s off the win.

Wojciech Pilarz belongs on the same side of the ledger. He did not race a single A final at a 2026 ranking regatta, and in Poznań he finished sixth over 200 m, 1.10 s behind the winner. He improved in every round: 38.59, 37.08, 35.25. Over that distance, in shifting wind on Lake Malta, that does not happen often.

Fourth place for the women's K4 counts as a gain too. Sandra Ostrowska, Dominika Putto, Julia Olszewska and Katarzyna Kościołek missed bronze by 1.01 s, and a year earlier in Milan they were third in the B final, eleventh overall. In June they took European silver, and in Poznań they held that level.

Borucki won a first senior world medal at the age of twenty, in an event with 48 entries. In the semi-final he posted 1:37.93 — 1.02 s quicker than his own final the next day, and 0.14 s quicker than the time Ádám Varga used to win silver.

Olszewska's races read similarly. She posted 40.80 in the semi-final and 41.13 in the final, where she finished sixth. Her semi-final time would have placed her fifth. The margins were small: the whole six-boat group finished within 1.42 s.

The women's K2 was the biggest disappointment. Klatt and Puławska arrived as world champions and Montreal World Cup winners and finished seventh, 3.69 s behind Australia. Over 500 m, and for a defending crew, that is a wide margin.

Głazunow did not repeat his 2025 results. Over the kilometre he went out in the semi-final and finished fourth in the B final, twelfth overall; in Milan he was sixth in this event. Over 5000 m he came fifth, against bronze a year ago. In the C2 with Norman Zezula he did reach the A final and finished eighth, two places up on last year.

Borowska also fell short of her own season. The European bronze medallist in the C1 200 m was fifth in her semi-final and won the B final, which left her tenth. Jarosław Kajdanek and Valerii Vichev, fifth in Montreal, did not finish their semi-final.

In paracanoe, Katarzyna Sobczak won her KL3 semi-final and finished fourth, 1.08 s off bronze. Monika Kukla also won her VL3 semi-final and came seventh in the final; a year earlier in Milan she was ninth.

Points towards Los Angeles 2028

Poznań was the first top-weighted regatta of the Los Angeles 2028 qualification cycle. World Championship results are multiplied by 1.5, so gold is worth 1500 points, bronze 1260 and fourth place 1200. The points go to the federation, not the athlete.

Poland produced four such results. Koliadych's gold counts towards the men's C1 ranking even though the Olympic canoe distance is 1000 m. Every single-boat event on the programme feeds the C1 and K1 rankings, and a federation banks its best single result from each regatta. Puławska's bronze scores in the women's K1, Borucki's in the men's K1, and the women's K4 fourth place in the K4 500 m.

The medal table does not show the quota picture. Quotas are allocated in a fixed order: fours first, then pairs, then singles; in canoe, C2 before C1. A federation that wins a K4 quota no longer counts in the K2 ranking. K4 rewards eleven federations, the singles the fewest: six in K1 and five in C1. Poland's Poznań results are strongest where the quotas are scarcest, and thinner where they are handed out first.

Each federation counts its eight best results from eight different regattas, with no more than six from a single continent. Poland has five events from the window behind it — the World Cups in Szeged, Brandenburg and Montreal, the Europeans in Montemor-o-Velho and the Worlds in Poznań. Only one of those was outside Europe, so filling all eight slots will need at least one more overseas trip in 2027.

What's next

The domestic calendar restarts immediately: the Polish Canoe Marathon Championships begin on 1 September, the Polish Masters Championships on 5 September and the Olympic Hopes Regatta on 10 September, the meeting where the age groups moving up to the senior squad usually show first. The season closes with the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Gualeguaychú in late October.

None of those add points to the Olympic ranking. The qualification window runs to 31 December 2027, and the next scoring chances come in the 2027 season: the World Cups, the European Championships and the 2027 World Championships, again at 1.5. If two federations end level on points, the 2027 Worlds result separates them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many medals did Poland win at the 2026 World Championships in Poznań?

Three: gold for Oleksii Koliadych in the C1 200 m, bronze for Anna Puławska in the women's K1 500 m and bronze for Alex Borucki in the men's K1 500 m.

How does that compare with previous championships?

The medal count matches last year in Milan, but the colours changed: two golds and a bronze in 2025, one gold and two bronzes in 2026. So did the events: of the three that produced medals in Milan, only the women's K1 500 m did so again in Poznań.

Which Pole raced above their season?

Oleksii Koliadych. He did not medal at any of the four earlier 2026 ranking regattas, then won all three rounds in Poznań, improving his time each time. Wojciech Pilarz's sixth place over 200 m ranks high too, given that he had not raced an A final at a ranking regatta all season.

Which results fell short?

Martyna Klatt and Anna Puławska, world champions in 2025 and Montreal World Cup winners, finished seventh in the K2, 3.69 s down. Wiktor Głazunow was twelfth over the kilometre and fifth over 5000 m, where he won bronze a year ago. Dorota Borowska, a European bronze medallist, finished tenth.

How many Los Angeles 2028 points did Poznań produce?

Four scoring results can be stated exactly: 1500 for Koliadych's gold, 1260 each for the bronzes of Puławska and Borucki, and 1200 for the women's K4 fourth place. Lower final placings also score, but considerably less.

Is one gold enough for a good position before the Games?

One regatta cannot settle it: the ranking counts eight results from eight different events and the window closes at the end of 2027. What matters more is where those points come from — quotas are handed out from fours down to singles, and Poland's Poznań results are strongest in the singles, where the fewest places are available.

Did Poland do worse than a year ago?

The medal count is identical and the title count is one lower. Away from the podium the ledger reads better: the women's K4 moved from eleventh in Milan to fourth, and the Głazunow–Zezula C2 from tenth to eighth. The boats that fell back are the ones that were winning a year ago.

Does seventh place for the women's K2 mean a drop in form?

One regatta cannot settle that. In the same season Klatt and Puławska won the Montreal World Cup and finished second at the Europeans, 0.53 s off the win. Their 3.69 s deficit in Poznań is, however, the largest of their season.

Poland leaves Poznań with a first world title for Oleksii Koliadych and two athletes who had never finished this high before: Alex Borucki and Wojciech Pilarz. The next test is the Polish marathon championships; the points part of the calendar returns in 2027.
